Chemical Peel Treatment
A chemical peel treatment is used to remove dead skin cells. There are different strengths of chemical peels which will be assessed by a practitioner, on the basis of your skin type and condition. Depending on which peel is applied will result in your skin peeling slightly or excessively. The lower the percentage of acid in the peel, the less down time you need. However, if you have a lower level percentage skin peel it is usual to need repeat treatments, opposed to a higher level one, where you may only need a single treatment. Chemical peel treatments are used to treat numerous skin conditions and concerns, such as acne, acne scarring, aged skin, open pores and hyperpigmentation. Anyone having a chemical peel would need to prep their skin for 2 weeks before the treatment. This is necessary to protect your skin from any adverse reactions, such as pigmentation problems, and in addition, will enhance the results.
How does the treatment feel?
The way the peel may feel will depend on which one you have. The lower level peels usually have a slight tingling or stinging sensation and the skin may feel a little sensitive or look red afterwards, but this should pass within a day. The medium peel may also tingle and after a few days are likely to start to peel. The peeling effect may last between 4 to 7 days. I would recommend that anyone who has sensitive skin starts on the lower level peel and builds up to this. The higher strength peel can be extremely painful and I would strongly recommend an in-depth consultation with the doctor and 3 month skin prep before this treatment is considered.
What skin conditions would benefit from a chemical peel?
• Acne or acne scars
• Age and liver spots
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Freckles
• Irregular skin pigmentation
• Rough skin and scaly patches
• Scars
• Sun-damaged skin
Skin reactions after peel
Some skin reactions are normal and should be expected.

• Minor infection - if you do notice an infection you should call your clinic/doctor immediately.
• Blisters ( do not pick or scratch)
• Swelling ( this is fine and should calm down within the week)
• Erythema ( this is normal)
• Dryness
• Itching
• Flaky skin ( please do not pick or scratch the skin as can cause scarring)
• Sensitivity to sunlight is normal for up to 4 weeks after treatment. An SPF50 should be used each day following treatment.   This will help prevent any pigmentation problems from occurring/worsening.
